The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 is the truck that shows up to the trailhead wearing a flannel shirt and expensive hiking boots rugged enough to play in the dirt, but stylish enough to valet at a steakhouse in Salt Lake City.

Fuel economy is what you would expect from a full-size truck with brawny engines. The 6.2 liter manages around 15 mpg city and 20 highway, which is basically the price of admission for hauling power and trail capability. The diesel option, on the other hand, gets you closer to mid 20s mpg, which is pretty good for something this size.

Inside, the AT4 tries to hide its muddy boots with upscale touches. Leather seats with Kalahari accents, heated and ventilated fronts, heated rear seats, and a roomy cab make it as comfortable as a luxury SUV. You also get an 8 inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and optional Bose audio. The MultiPro tailgate is the party trick, folding and flipping into six different positions that make loading, stepping up, or turning it into a camp bench stupidly easy.

For Utah life, this truck is basically built for it. High clearance for rocky backroads, four wheel drive for ski trips, V8 power for towing toys to Lake Powell, and enough luxury to make I-15 traffic bearable. The 2020 Sierra 1500 AT4 is the rare rig that can roll into a muddy campsite on Saturday and then pull up to a downtown dinner on Sunday without needing a wash in between.
